Issuance of regulations for nutritional labeling of “junk” food

Along with the issuance of the law known as the 'Junk Food Law', the Ministry of Health and Social Protection issued a Resolution (810 of 2021) on nutritional labeling that is also mandatory and establishes substantial requirements for companies in the food sector, not only for manufacturers, but also importers.

What both rules establish are additional requirements on information related to the nature and nutritional contents of products, which labels must include to inform the consumer.

The Ministry's standard applies to all foods marketed in Colombia, and the new law applies to so-called ultra-processed foods or foods containing certain components, not only those manufactured domestically, but also imported ones.

With the new standards, more information is required, presenting in a preponderant way the content of certain components, such as 'Excess of saturated fats', in the case of the law, or a positive seal, in the case of the Ministry's standard.
