This project is expected to generate more than 1,700 direct jobs during the construction phase and 6.36 jobs per thousand passengers transported during the operation phase. In addition, the airport seeks to increase the region's competitiveness, expand the department's air coverage and guarantee the provision of air navigation services in accordance with the standards and recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Colombia's Aeronautical Regulations (RAC).
The construction of this airport also seeks to resolve the operational limitations of the current La Nubia airport, which has a maximum capacity of 500,000 people per year and only offers daytime flights, in addition to the fact that the geographic characteristics of the area present natural obstacles that prevent it from improving its approach conditions.
The work will contribute to the specific objective of the "Infrastructure and environmental sustainability" commitment of the 2030 Strategic Plan, which implies having an adequately maintained and improved regional airport infrastructure, where airports have the capacity and efficiency to meet the growth in demand in the sector.
